Be precise what you want to accomplish.

“Getting many sales leads” doesn’t cut it. Imagine you need to communicate your goal through twitter, using only a limited amount of characters. What would the most important message be?

Make it traceable by including specific measurable parts.

How can you evaluate to which extent the goal has been met? While setting a goal to “increase sales”, is nice, it’s not sustainable. “Increasing sales by 15%”, well, that’s already a measurable goal.

Make it challenging, but within ability to achieve the outcome.

Say you’re in the ecommerce business. Throughout history you’ve generated 5000 sales per month. Tripling this number to 15 000 might be too big of a challenge and act as a de-motivator for the employees.

Align it with the greater goals or mission of the company.

How does the goal align with your key responsibilities? Setting a goal to acquire new businesses offshore without wanting to go multinational is obviously conflicting.

Have a timeline for meeting that goal.

So, if you set a goal to increase your ecommerce website traffic by 15%, you’ll need to know the deadline so you could start working on a secondary goal.
